Basil Pesto


Plant Family: Basil is an annual herb belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae (mint) and like others in this family, basil can be identified by its square, hairy stems. There are over 40 known varieties of basil of which Ocimum basilicum or Sweet Basil is the most commonly known and grown.

Nutritional Information: There are over 40 different types of basil and it is used in herbal remedies around the world- it is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. To receive these health benefits, basil can be added to sauces, salads, or used to make tea. 2 tablespoons of basil contain 1 calorie. Simple Homemade Pesto Recipe 1 cup fresh italian basil leaves 3 cloves garlic, peeled 3 tablespoons cashew nuts (if you can't find italian pine nuts) 1/3 cup grated Parmesan Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/3 cup olive oil

Directions: in a blender or food processor, add basil and a little oil first then the rest of the ingredients, pulse until you have the desired consistency. It is best when rough chopped and not a smooth puree!
